Tobacco and/or other plant mixtures have been used by American Indian nations for centuries as a medicine with cultural and spiritual importance.

The spirits were believed to be extremely fond of tobacco and offerings were delivered either by smoke from a pipe or by placing dry tobacco at the base of a plant from which medicine was gathered, a pinch in the water to assure calm weather and on journeys or hunts, Indian men paused for a smoke and left a pinch of tobacco as an offering when they encountered certain features of the landscape, including waterfalls, misshapen trees, oddly shaped rocks, and lakes or islands said to harbor spirits.
