Why We Love Coffee Enemas

Coffee enemas are one of our favourite cleansing practices.

Simple, accessible and surprisingly powerful, they support two of the body's most important processes: detoxification and elimination.

Coffee enemas have been used for generations and became particularly well known through the work of Dr Max Gerson, who incorporated them into Gerson Therapy in the early twentieth century.

But what exactly is a coffee enema? What happens in the body when we use one? And why do we love them so much?

Let's explore.

What is a Coffee Enema?

A coffee enema involves introducing a preparation of brewed organic coffee into the colon through the rectum, where it is retained for around 12–15 minutes before being released.

Like other enemas, the introduction of fluid into the colon helps to soften stool, stimulate the bowel and encourage the elimination of waste.

But a coffee enema is more than a bowel cleanse.

The addition of coffee brings another dimension to the practice, with naturally occurring compounds in coffee interacting with pathways involved in liver function, bile and antioxidant activity.

This relationship with the liver is one of the reasons coffee enemas became such an important part of the Gerson Therapy and why they continue to be used within cleansing practices today.

What Happens in the Body During a Coffee Enema?

When coffee is introduced rectally, compounds within the coffee are absorbed via blood vessels in the lower colon. Some of these absorbed compounds are carried to the liver via the portal vein.

One of the effects of a coffee enema is the stimulation of the liver, which can help to increase bile flow.

Bile is one of the body’s key pathways for removing waste.

We can think of this as a beautifully interconnected process:

The liver processes. Bile carries. The bowel releases.

Coffee also contains naturally occurring compounds, including cafestol and kahweol, which have been studied for their interaction with the body's glutathione enzyme systems.

Glutathione is one of the body's most important antioxidants. It helps protect our cells against oxidative stress and plays an important role in the liver's processing and neutralisation of compounds for elimination. Research into coffee compounds has found that cafestol and kahweol can influence glutathione S-transferase (GST), a family of enzymes involved in these detoxification processes.

At the same time, the enema itself stimulates the colon and encourages the release of accumulated waste.

So rather than thinking of a coffee enema simply as a way to empty the bowel, we can think of it as supporting two interconnected parts of the body's cleansing process: the processing and movement of waste through the liver and bile, and its eventual elimination through the bowel.

And this is why coffee enemas are such a wonderful detox ally.

Why We Love Coffee Enemas

Liver detoxification
By supporting bile flow and the body's glutathione system, coffee enemas provide valuable support to one of our primary organs of detoxification.

Waste removal
The enema stimulates the colon and encourages the release of accumulated waste, helping to relieve constipation, bloating and digestive heaviness.

Increased vitality
Many people report feeling lighter, clearer and more energised after a coffee enema, with an uplift in both physical energy and mental clarity.

Reduced oxidative stress
By supporting the glutathione system, coffee enemas can help strengthen the body's antioxidant defences and protect cells from oxidative stress.

Nervous system regulation
The practice encourages us to slow down and rest, supporting the body's parasympathetic - or “rest and digest” - state and creating space for regulation and release.
